If you don't think you're beautiful enough

A couple of years ago I had a super model in my coach certification program. She wanted to become a coach so she could tell young girls about this. It was wonderful to get this woman certified as a coach so she could extend her reach and fulfill her mission. Now she works with teenagers and young women.

Emotional Intelligence is the Missing Piece

Emotional Intelligence is "the missing piece" for most people. Other reactions are relief and excitement.

Susan, here is the info you requested. My brain is already full from reading this a.m.!!!!! Realize I have to create some files for all of this new stuff. I re-read the EQ stuff I took previously, then skimmed the foundation course you sent today. I'm just giddy with excitement when I read this stuff!!!

Job Security? Be a Certified Coach

As the media continues tomake it worse than it probably is, I'm reminded of how resilient people can be, and creative about options. And also calm in the face of fear.

If you become paralyzed in the face of fear, and freeze, you're likely to make it worse than it is.

One thing you may have to cope with is being laid off -- of the fear or possiblity of it.

If you were a coach and had your own business, think how different this would be. That's one reason I went into it. First, because I wanted to help people. But at the same time, I didn't like the uncertainty in the workplace. Who would be fired? Who would be laid off? Would my job be there, be the same, be eliminated? Might I be transfered to some city I didn't want to live in?

Now's a good time for change. Want to become a certified coach and be your own boss? No one can fire you.

I don't usually send you an email except for my monthly newsletter, but having just returned from several weeks abroad and having tuned in to the news I have been away from, I have been surprised by the level of fear that grew in such a short time.Since I have traveled quite a bit all over the world, one thing that I have learned is how resilient and creative people can be. But not those who are paralyzed by fear. They hunker down and let others (the news media; "experts") tell them what is possible and the way things are.We all have some capability for creative action and change.

People Make a Difference

Charles Schultz' Philosophy (the creator of Peanuts) arrived in my mailbag today. I didn't Snopes it. If it isn't his philosophy, it's mine and that of the people who mean the most to me on a daily basis.

Here's a test for you to take.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

How to become an excellent Life Coach

HERE ARE THE TOP TEN WAYS TO BECOME AN EXCELLENT COACH - a dream position where you are your own boss, help people can't get fired, and is totally portable.

1. Get trained and certified with an individualized program.

As the director of a coach certification program, I know that the individuals who are drawn to coaching are very different and have unique backgrounds. With an individualized program, you do not have to waste your time going over the things you already know, or may even be degreed or credentialed in.

2. Get coaching yourself.

The coach you hire will be your 'model' for how coaching is done. You have a chance to experience the process in real life!

3. Know the difference between a therapist, a coach and a friend.

Friends are well-meaning, but often lack objectivity. Therapists can spend time sorting out things from the past and have constraints because of licensing regulations that do not apply to coaching. In coaching, we go forward. Whatever the person's past, we present them with the opportunity, encouragement and the TOOLS to go forward and re-create their life.

4. Make sure your coaching certification program includes marketing, by an individual who has spent time marketing.

To be an excellent coach, you have to have clients. You are an entrepreneur.

5. Learn to listen more than talk.

This is counter-intuitive, and a mistake many enthusiastic beginners make. You will learn more about the client and their situation by listening, and with guided listening- asking the right, and the hard, questions - you will be able to guide them in the direction that will win for them.

6. Don't think you have to be an expert at something.

What you are an expert in, is coaching. There are many principals and tools that apply to a vast range of situations, whether the person is male or female; a doctor or a longshoreman; a parent or non-parent; a 26 year old or a 65 year old. A good coaching program gives you the META view, the overview, that teaches you to see the commonality.

7. Never think you know it all.

In fact, the fun of coaching is that you will learn from every client.

8. Keep learning on your own.

Just because you have the certification, don't quit learning! I can say with some certainty that anything you learn will make you a better coach. It's a field for people who love to learn.

9. Remember that coaching is a service profession.

Your job is to make your client's life easier, not harder. Be flexible in your schedules, payments, length of calls, etc. For instance, I make my services available nights and weekends -- because that's when working people have time to contact their coach.

10. Join and participate in collegial organizations and activities.

I had the opportunity to serve on Thomas Leonard's R&D team and it was an invaluable experience. I am also a founding member of Coachville. Staying in touch with your leader and colleagues keeps you in front at the trough, so to speak.

Hi Susan,

I read your blog post.

Giving up what you want is sometimes really hard. I fought it for a long time, because my kids were all wrapped up in it too and it doesn't matter that they're all grown up. As a mom, you never stop wanting things to be good for your kids!

I am an American living in Canada, married to a Canadian man. We met and got married in Nova Scotia, I had been living in Washington State. After living in NS for 2 years, I decided I wanted to be closer to my 2 grown sons and the grandchildren I had never met! So I started planning a move. I thought I had it so together. I decided in 2006 that I wanted to be in British Columbia by fall. I figured out how much money my husband and I would have to save to move, figured it out as to how much he would have to be earning and so forth. I researched all the moving options, moving vans, driving ourselves across country, planes, trains, how to get our cats there, searching for a house rental online, and so on.

As the summer progressed, my husband's work situation fell apart. The construction industry in NS, like so much else there, was seasonal and unreliable. Not only were we not saving money, but we were getting behind in paying our bills. Then my younger son announced he was getting married in September and wanted me to be there. This pushed my own deadline ahead at least a month. I stressed and stretched every dollar, worried my brain to death trying to figure it out, then decided to just give up on the timing of it all. If I didn't try to make it happen by September, or by any time, at least I wouldn't be so stressed.

The Universe knew my intentions, my desires, and that would just have to be enough.

This is remarkable, I'm still awed at how this worked...but that same day my husband came home, and before I said anything to him, told me that his work partner wanted to move to B.C. with us. All of a sudden the possibilities opened back up, we could split all the expenses, including renting a house, plus we would arrive with a business partner, always helpful.From there, it all fell into place. My older son said I could come stay with him and his family and go to the wedding with them, then stay with them until I found a house of my own. Then his (Canadian) wife got her mother looking for a house for us in BC, which she ended up finding and sharing with me. The landlord turned out to be a former client of hers, who waived all deposits because he knew her so well (she was his accountant; can't get any more reliable than that!). Meanwhile, my husband and his partner made it as far as Calgary, Alberta and went to work there, and eventually this is where I ended up too. It's a quick 1 1/2 hour plane flight to see my sons, and we're both making a ton of money here, it's like a gold rush, so I can visit them as often as I like.

We went from poverty and loneliness 5000 miles from my family, to moving closer, getting out of debt, and making good money, within a year, once I just "gave it up".-- Kathryn Beach Calgary, Alberta

Football Requires Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is as essential to winning at sports as it is to winning in everything else in life. Whether you're after the Big Win in career, school, marriage, aging, stress, or retirement ... IQ gets you through school. EQ (emotional intelligence) gets you through life. And the good news is that emotional intelligence can be learned.

"EQ in sports?" you say.

Ever watch someone in a tennis match 'psych out' the opponent? Long time-outs, arguing about calls, taking too long to serve, acting sick or injured, anything to prolong, distract ... or serving with strange sounds?

One of the ways I increased my understanding of emotional intelligence so I could teach it to others, was accompanying my cousin, the tennis pro, to matches. "It's a head game," he would tell me. Well, it's an emotional game, too. If you watch teenagers play, you see clearly that until and unless they can control their emotions, they are going to lose matches they should have won. Their emotional reactions -- their weaknesses -- will be studied by their opponents and used against them, just as surely as they'll learn where to place the serve. It's a game of skill, and part of the skill is identifying and using the other's weaknesses.

Well latest on the emotional intelligence bandwagon is the Kentucky State University football team. They're working with Dr. Dennis Rader, a professor at KSU, who says he's not a sports psychologist but an emotional intelligence coach.

Wonder if he's gotten his EQ coach certification** yet ...

I've trained and certified EQ coaches with many different backgrounds, who plan to use it in many various ways. An MBA who spcializes in business communication. An equine specialist who teaches EQ through horses. A therapist who wanted to add emotional intelligernce to her mix. A manager who just knew she needed it. A minister who had been asked to prepare himself to teach emotional intelligence at seminary. An entrepreneur who wanted to be a coach and knew that emotional intelligence applied to any problem, and held the solution to any issue a coaching client could present. And I've trained and certified coaches all over the world - Malaysia, the Philippines, UK, Scotland, Wales, Beijing, India ... all over the US, of course.

Head football coach Fred Farrier's football team is still working toward winning its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship (see article here: State-Journal.com http://www.state-journal.com/news/article/2305711) and the coach felt workshops would assist the team to overcome barriers and achieve success, so started to work with Dr. Rader. Coach Farrier is quoted in the article as saying, "We wanted to try to help our team find a way to finish projects and work around obstacles. We felt like if we were able to identify some of those issues we could work through those issues."
