Protein p11 and Depression

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & HEALTH / DEPRESSION, STROKE

Depression is a debilitating disease that strikes over 18 million Americans. It's cause is still not known. We know that depression is in some way related to the neurotransmitter, serotonin, but how it works is still unclear.

Researchers at Rockefeller University and Sweden's Karolinska Institute just announced they had found a new protein, called p11, which appears to be instrumental in how the brain responds to serotonin. The found that people who were depressed had lower levels of p11, which is thought to produce the receptors on cell surfaces that help serotonin do its important work.

The protein p11 is known to be sensitive to some of the stress-related hormones, and we know that a bout of depression often accompanies severe stress.

Does it matter how you handle stress? Certainly it does, as we know it isn't always what happens, but how you react to it, and this has to do with your thoughts, and your emotional intelligence.

If you'd like to work on handling stress better, and developing your emotional intelligence, call me for coaching, 210-496-0678, or email me at sdunn@susandunn.cc .

ARIEL SHARON, STROKE SUFFERER

As I keyboard, we await news of Ariel Sharon's condition, and along with it the fate of Kadima, the party founded by Mr. Sharon late last year, Israel, the whole region and the world.

Without partisanship, our prayers are with the man as he struggles for his life, and the doctors who care for him.

What is a stroke? A stroke is when an area of the brain is deprived of its blood supply for 24 hours or more which causes vital brain tissue to die. This is usually because of a blockage or a blood vessel, or one that bursts.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT STOKE?

One of the things you can do to reduce the risk of stroke is to watch your diet. You should lower your salt intake, and saturated fats, and add fruits and vegetables which contain anti-oxidants to help protect the blood vessels against atherosclerosis. Unsaturated fats (found in nuts, seeds and oily fish) and fibre can also lower risk.

**It's been estimated that consuming 2 or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day can reduce the risk of stroke by 40 per cent.

Another way you can add more anti-oxidants in your diet is with nutraceuticals. Shop for nutraceuticals online at ARBONNE. Try the DefenseBuilder, to support your immune system.
