Won't You Be My Neighbor

"Feelings are mentionable and manageable." - Fred Rogers
"I'm supposed to be a pretty tough guy and this is the first time I've had goose bumps today." - Senator Pastore

Who's tougher than the US Senate? Fred Rogers. What a class act.

In this rare clip from 1969, Fred comes before the Senate hearing committee on funding for the newly developed Corporation for Public Broadcasting, headed by Senator Orlando Pastore from Rhode Island. Nixon had proposed cutting the budget in half, due to Vietnam spending.

Beginning:
Senator Pastore: “Alright Rogers, you got the floor.”

Middle:
Mister Rogers: "I like you just the way you are."

Ending:
Senator Pastore:
“I think it’s wonderful …
I think it’s wonderful …
Looks like you just landed 20 million dollars.”

“What do you do with the mad that you feel?
When you feel so mad you could bite
When the whole wide world
Seems oh so wrong
And nothing you do seems very right . . ."
